ShakeOut- The Great California Earthquake Drill 10-18-12

On Thursday, October 18th at 10:18 a.m., join 8.2 million people in this year’s  Great California ShakeOut earthquake drill! California is participating along with 21 other states, and six countries including Japan, Italy and New Zealand.  Looking at the list of participating local organizations, San Mateo County is not  represented yet.

The website for ShakeOut is here, lots of good information is on the website.

Nexis Preparedness- Supplies Vendor

A preparedness event was held at Lockheed Martin last week for their employees.  One vendor there was Nexis Preparedness Systems, a major vendor of preparedness kits and supplies that provides these goods to Lockheed Martin.

“Nexis Preparedness Systems is your “one-stop-shop” for all your Emergency Preparedness Supplies for your Home and Family. You’ll find everything you need from Emergency Preparedness Kits to 25-Year Shelf Life Freeze Dried Food.”

I spoke with their representative and they are willing to share the Lockheed employee discount code with our CERT teams.  For a 10% discount, use the code “Shirley” at checkout.

SpareOne Emergency Cell Phone

While cruising the web for cool preparedness items, I stumbled onto SpareOne.  This is an emergency cell phone, and is the ONLY cell phone in the world that runs on a single AA battery (the world’s most common battery).  The battery is supposed to be good for 15 years in storage, all you need to do is to install the SIM card from your existing cell phone into and you are good to go.  Without a SIM card, you are still able to call 911 with the SpareOne phone.  They even have a built in tool and adapter to fit the micro-SIM card used in iPhones.  There is even a built-in LED flashlight, panic siren.

Available on their website for list price of $119 but I did see them advertised online from other vendors for as low as $70.  While this is not cheap, this could be well worth it during extended power outages if you have no alternate means of charging your regular cell phone.

CERT Summer Social Photos

The wait is over, photos from last week’s BBQ event are now on our CERT photo album for viewing by everyone.  Enjoy!

Belmont Meeting Minutes Are Posted

Go to the Meeting Minutes page to read about the new developments taking place with Belmont CERT.  Part of the meeting included a close up look at Belmont’s new HazMat vehicle.  Photos have been posted to the CERT Photo Album.

CERT Volunteers Requested for SFO Exercise

Here is another great volunteer opportunity for CERTs throughout the County.  San Francisco International Airport will be conducting an emergency full-scale
exercise simulating a water crash of an aircraft.  Their need is for volunteers to play the roles of family and friends of the passengers, along with “victims” of the crash.  This activity will take place in the International Terminal.   Information flyer.

If you’re interested and wish to volunteer, please contact Toshia S. Marshall directly (Toshia.Marshall@flysfo.com 650-821-3302).  For Belmont CERTs volunteering, please let Pat (path@belmont.gov) know if you are participating so he can keep track of CERT activities.

CERT Volunteers Needed

Look on the Activities page for new information regarding CERT volunteer opportunities at the San Carlos Art & Wine and Redwood City Port Fest events.

Please let Pat know ASAP if you want to take this class (path@belmont.gov). If we get more than 6 interested CERT members, the first 6 will go to this class and we will have slots available at the next class on Tuesday November 6.

Updated FEMA Training Links

FEMA has updated some of their online training and the links previously posted to this blog are no longer working (wonder why they just didn’t redirect you to the new course link…)

Note: IS-100.b is an updated version of the IS-100.a course. If you have successfully completed IS-100 or IS-100.a, you may want to review the new version of the course. For credentialing purposes, the courses are equivalent.

CERT Blog Milestone

This week marks two milestones for my CERT activities; the fourth anniversary of the start of our involvement with CERT, and this blog surpassing 20,000 views.  I don’t know how that compares, but that seems like a lot for this humble little blog.
