This week personnel from Belmont Police, as part of the San Mateo County SWAT Counter Terrorism Assault Team, and Belmont Fire Department, in their role as the San Mateo County HazMat Unit, participated in the Community Shield counter terrorism exercise.

Several other County agencies including San Mateo Co. Sheriff, San Mateo Fire, Foster City Fire, EMS and PublicHealth also participated. The full-scale exercise, which was held at the San Mateo County Event Center, dealt with a simulated terrorist incident involving the release of hazardous materials. Volunteers, including members of Belmont Fire Department CERT, acted as role-players, ranging from terrorists to victims who had to be “decontaminated”.

Local civic officials from around San Mateo County, including City Manager Greg Scoles and Council Members Charles Stone and  Davina Hurt, attended as observers.  It was an excellent training exercise and demonstrated the capabilities and skills of our first responders to deal with a WMD type incident.

2015 Disaster Preparedness Day

Another year, another fair, another successful Disaster Preparedness Day!  From what I’ve heard, the Belmont CERT beanbag toss/preparedness quiz attraction was a complete success.  It was great to see such a good volunteer turnout for both Belmont and Redwood City/San Carlos CERT teams.

Photos have been posted to our CERT Photo Album.

Foster City CERT Needs Volunteer “Victims”

Volunteer “victims” needed for Saturday, March 21, 2015!
“Victims” play an integral role in their drill on March 21st in that their CERT students take everything they have learned, and apply the skills they have just acquired.

“Victims” will have make-up applied and will act out various scenarios one would encounter in a disaster, such as an earthquake.  “Moulage” as it is commonly referred to, is the “make-up” applied to a person to simulate injuries sustained during a disaster.

The drill is held at the Foster City Fire Department. Foster City Fire Department personnel and former CERT students will be on hand to help insure the day is a success.

Other details:
·         If you are under 18 years old, you must have a signed consent form
·         There are two shifts available. You may volunteer for one or both shifts. Ideally we would love to have you work both shifts! Please note, there are limited slots for each shift, first come first served.
·         A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided!

·         Morning Shift – You need to arrive at 7:15 AM
·         Afternoon Shift – You need to arrive at 11:00 AM
