Red Cross Shelter Management

Where:  Red Morton Community Center, 1120 Roosevelt Ave, Redwood City

When large groups of people are temporarily displaced from their homes, volunteers and city staff respond by opening operational shelters.  This evening class will help prepare CERT members to effectively and sensitively manage team shelter operations to meet the needs of people displaced as a result of a disaster.  Join us for a presentation from the American Red Cross on disaster relief shelter organization and operations.  Topics that will be covered include:

 Identify how a shelter is structured and operates
 Explain the activities and tasks that take place in shelters
 Explain the types of works that shelter service workers will perform and how to do it
 Identify Client needs
 Identify the different types of shelters

CERT CE TRAINING: Flood Response – Sandbag Prep Training

Topics to be covered: Where can you find sandbag stations?  How do you assemble sandbags?  How do you properly use the tools commonly found at a sandbag station?  How do you safely lift sandbags, AND, how do you stack them so they are most effective to divert water or protect an area against flooding?  

Important Notes:  This training will take place OUTDOORS.  Please dress for the weather.  Also, please wear Face Covering, closed shoes/boots, and bring:  work gloves, CERT helmet, and CERT Vest. 

SOUND The ALARM – Smoke Alarm Installation event

Help make your neighbors safer! We partner with the American Red Cross to install FREE smoke alarms in residences in our cities. You can choose what role you’d like – Installer; Educator; Documentarian.
Don’t worry! Training is provided to all volunteers. Lunch is included.

Volunteers will be sent out in teams of 2 or 3 to residences that have made appointments with the Red Cross. Register on Neon so we know how many CERTs to expect, please.  

CE Class – CERT-Specific PG&E Training

This is a Continuing Education (CE) class for CERT-trained members, only.   Great information on keeping yourself safe when it comes to electricity and natural gas.  This class really is helpful to your situational awareness, and will feature information that will help you in your daily life, as well as during emergencies! 

CE Class: SHELTER Fundamentals (led by Red Cross)

This class will prepare you to assist in a Shelter – such as one set up by Red Cross, or by one of our cities, after a disaster. This is a very realistic assignment for CERT members in a disaster. Even if you have taken this training before – things have changed since the Pandemic … so considerations have changed.
Space is limited, so please register through Neon.
Please plan to arrive at 8:45 AM to sign in, settle in, and we can start on time.

Fire Station Open House

Saturday, October 7th at Fire Station 28 CERTs needed to staff a CERT Booth, keep people off the fire apparatus, pass out goodies, hand out snacks & water, show off one of our CERT trailers, show off HAM Radio, update people on SMC Alert and Zonehaven, and keep people safe should the engine or truck have to move due to a call.

September 11th Ceremony

Every year, we pause to remember those lost in the wake of the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001. There will be a short, solemn ceremony at SMCFD Fire Station 21 in San Mateo. We ask that you arrive wearing your CERT teamwear (polo, t-shirt, or vest) and plan to stand at attention together during the ceremony. Event begins at 8:30 AM.  Please arrive by 8:20 AM.   Event is usually over by 9:15 AM.

Save the Date- Chili Cookoff in Central Park

TRAFFIC CONTROL – Summer Days Event (Choice of Either Day)

Special Request from City of Foster City for CERT assistance. For CERTs who have taken the CERT Traffic Management Class. Manage traffic for the Summer Days event at a lightly traveled intersection. Maintain your team’s safety at all times. Assist visitors by directing them to the parking areas. Assist residents by allowing them to drive through to their homes.

Search and Rescue/Triage/Disaster Medical/Survivor Removal MCI Exercise

The staffing opportunities are:

  • Assist at the ICP – We will need six people (This is the most requested position, please don’t be offended if you make this request, but are not assigned to this position..)
  • Staging Manager
  • Scribe
  • Radio Communications
  • CERT Response Teams (this is what we train for!)
  • Victims – This position is for non-CERT members (family, friends, etc.). You will not be a victim unless you specifically request to be a victim or if you have not completed the entire CERT Academy, but still want to participate.

There will be a refresher training to help you prepare for this exercise (highly encourage you to attend..!), here are the details:

We’ve been asked to provide CERT Teams to patrol the area of the Foster City 4th of July Celebration. 

We are the force magnifiers for our professional responders.  CERT Patrols (3 people each) will walk around a specific area (we’ll change the area each hour) and report in anything unusual.  Then, the professionals will take it from there!

**If you are a HAM Radio Operator, please let Sandra know – we need a HAM Radio Operator on each team. 

We will have two (2) shifts.  Please sign up for the shift you prefer.

Building Damage Assessment – CERT CE Training

This is a skill set that all CERTs should be familiar with. Whether or not to go into a building. What to look for when assessing a building/home. This is a CE Class and is only for CERT members.

EARTH DAY – Foster City Clean-Up Day

SMC Fire CERT has been especially requested to handle EQUIPMENT CHECK-OUT, COMMUNICATIONS, and SAFETY OFFICER duties. 9 HAM Radio Operators and 16 other CERT volunteers needed!
*** All CERTs are eligible, but Ham Radio Operators and CERTs who have completed Traffic Management Training are needed.

Redwood City / San Carlos CERT is proud to announce a new CERT Academy!

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates volunteers about disaster preparedness for the hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations.  CERT offers a consistent, nationwide approach to volunteer training and organization that professional responders can rely on during disaster situations, allowing them to focus on more complex tasks.  Please see the attached flyer for additional information that is covered during each class.

The Disaster Psychology and Terrorism Modules will need to be taken on-line and information will be provided during the first class.

Wednesday/Thursday classes are from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm and will be held at the Red Morton Community Center, 1120 Roosevelt Ave in Redwood City. The Saturday Class will be from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm and will be held at the Armory, 939 Valota Rd in Redwood City. During the Saturday morning session students will have the opportunity to practice the training they received in the classroom, then in the afternoon students will participate in a mock disaster exercise. Participants must complete all classes and Skills Day in order to receive a CERT Certificate of Completion and become a member of the Redwood City and San Carlos CERT Community. Make-up options will be available by request.

Stop The Bleed Class

Stop the Bleed is a nationwide program designed to empower civilian bystanders to act quickly and save lives.  Learning basic training on how to control bleeding in an emergency, until first responders are able to take, over could make a difference in someone’s life..

Join us for a one-hour, hands on training to learn techniques to quickly control severe bleeding with pressure, packing, or a tourniquet until help arrives. At the end of the session, you’ll receive a certificate of training, and one hour of continuing education credit.

FRS CERT Radio Class

As you may already know, effective communications during a disaster is of the utmost importance and it’s extremely important that CERT members not only know how to use radio’s, but how to use them properly and with purpose.  Please join Redwood City/San Carlos CERT for a course on emergency communication emphasizing FRS and GMRS radios.  In addition to a discussion on these radios, how to use them and other relevant information, you will also have an opportunity to put your skills to practice!

  • Why should CERT members have radios and emergency communication skills? 
  • What are the different license requirements for amateur (ham) radio and for FRS and GMRS radio, and how do I get a license?
  • How are these radios used by CERT in an emergency according to a CERT communication plan?
